Home-selling tips for a couple going through divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2017 | Divorce |

Going through a divorce is stressful, emotional and overwhelming. You never know what your spouse will ask for, and it’s likely you will be selling the family home. This makes the process even more upsetting. You have to say good-bye to everything you’ve built together as a couple. Following are some important tips for selling the home when you go through a divorce.

If you are on speaking terms with your spouse, it’s best to hire a real estate agent the two of you agree upon. Hire someone who has helped other couples sell their family home while going through a divorce. He or she will know how to handle such a difficult situation and will likely have empathy for what the two of you are dealing with.

Never try to put the agent in the middle of any arguments or other issues regarding the divorce. This can not only make the situation very difficult, but it might also send the agent running for the hills. The agent was hired to represent both of you in the sale of the home — not just one of you.

You will also want to figure out the best form of communication between you, your spouse and the agent. Use this method of communication often and almost exclusively to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks.

You can also utilize your family law attorney when selling the family home. He or she will be able to answer questions and help you work through any issues you have with your spouse.

Are you preparing to file for divorce in New Hampshire? Speak with an experienced family law attorney as soon as possible so you can begin the divorce process and protect your rights.
