How to deal with parental alienation

On Behalf of | Sep 13, 2023 | Divorce |

Parental alienation is a heartbreaking situation that impacts both the children and parents. Being denied the opportunity to have meaningful contact with your children may leave you feeling emotional and powerless.

However, resources are available to help you deal with this challenging situation.

What is parental alienation?

Parental alienation happens when one parent uses manipulation to turn their child against the other parent. It often occurs in highly contentious separations and divorces, and the child may display fear, disrespect, or hostility towards the parent.

Because of the psychological and emotional harm it inflicts on the child, some consider it to be a form of child abuse. They may suffer long-term damage in the form of low self-esteem, depression, problems with future relationships and substance abuse.

To deal with the impact of parental alienation, it’s essential to keep your emotions under control when you are with your child. Avoid negative comments and angry behavior. Instead, focus on being calm and providing your child with a safe and loving environment.

Even when your child is trying to push you away, keeping the lines of communication open is imperative. Let them know you love and care for them and are there for them whenever they need to talk.

You must also remember to practice self-care to deal with the emotional exhaustion. It’s important to realize that change won’t happen overnight. It will take patience and perseverance. You should also have a strong support group and a professional team to help you deal with your feelings.

It is a painful experience to have your ex-spouse turn your children against you. You may need to discuss your situation with someone who can work with the court and fight for your interests. A strong, meaningful relationship with your children is imperative for them and you.
